About
I have always had this combination of interest in things both technical and creative. Some days it feels like a blessing and other days a curse. The two sides of my brain tend to argue with each other quite a bit, but those times when they do decide to work together can be very rewarding. I think most people that know me personally would consider me to be a creatively intense geek, if that makes any sense. Most of what I spend my time on involves visual creativity or music, then ultimately ends up using several computers. Currently I am focusing alot on photography.
Art and Photography
I had been working in the Visual Effects/Animation industry for a few years and really felt like I needed to get back into more creatively stimulating areas. Earlier in my creative pursuits I was doing alot of wildlife painting. I loved painting animals and nature. I had paintings in a couple of galleries by the age of 18. I even had critiques of my work by Robert Bateman.
In the past few years I have discovered a love for photography. Mostly in the nature category. My father had actually been quite involved in photography while I was growing up, but I found it frustrating to wait to develop pictures to know if I really got what I was after, and I lost interest quickly. Then came digital cameras, printers and my favorite program in the world, Photoshop. Wow. Everything I always dreamt about. I could see my results instantly, tweak it in Photoshop, then print in out on an full color printer. No waiting required. Now I felt like I could really be creative with it.
I am not a Photography purist. I consider myself an artist. I feel the composition, shapes, colors and or feeling it portrays are what really interest me in an image. If it looks good, it is good. While I really love the technical part of photography (the geek in me) I try to not get too hung up in it. I don’t need a Loupe to tell me if an image hanging on the wall looks good or not.
I am quite fascinated with Macro photography. There is so much to see that can’t be seen any other way. A wonderful micro world of abstracts and delicate detail. Amazing what’s in that little spot you zoom into. Wherever you are there is always something interesting in the few feet surrounding you. I can’t really explain where my interest in photographing wildlife grew from. Watching these animals functioning each in their own kind of universe. I often imagine what kind of conversations they might have with each other if they could talk. That’s probably a result of too many cartoons, TV and movies in my life. Like one big Pixar movie in my head. I also believe I often prefer the observance of wildlife to observing people. Not that I feel the need to go live in the jungle with a bunch of gorillas, but there is something very serene, yet at the same time exhilarating, when you are photographing of wildlife.
Film and Television
I’ve been working in the film and television industry for about 13 years. I am what’s usually referred to as a CG Generalist. I end up doing a little bit of everything. Modeling, texturing, rigging, animation and compositing. As a freelancer it’s easier to get work if you know how to handle a few areas. I would say my strong points are 3D animation, modeling/texturing and lighting. Most of my work is remote freelance, meaning I work alot from my home. I do end up doing a bit of traveling every once in awhile for those special jobs, but for the most part I like working remotely.
A few of the movies and television series I’ve worked on are:
Sin City, Spy Kids 2, League of Extrodinary Gentlemen, Underworld 2, Snakes on a Plane, Gothika, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Stargate SG-1 and Dark Angel.
Music
Now during this whole 20 some year period of my life I have also been very involved with music. I love singing and playing guitar. No not little girly acoustic guitar (no offense to girl acoustic guitar players) but I like to feel my insides move while I play a loud nasty chord. It’s a huge release like nothing else I do creatively. So much so that it has always held it’s own reserved place in my life. I’ve juggled tours and recording with my other careers ever since I bought my first electric guitar. You can find more information on the music area of my site.
That is a summary of my creative life. I am also very happily married to the most talented and caring man I know. He shares my love of music and produces, writes and records for many other talented artists. You can also find out more about him at www.myronwegner.com.
